What to do if you smell propane gas

Acting quickly protects your family. If you smell propane, follow these steps right away:

1. Extinguish cigarettes, candles and other open flames immediately.
2. Don’t touch switches or electronics. A small spark from a light switch, a phone or an appliance can ignite the gas. Leave them alone.
3. Get everyone out. Leave the home or area immediately and take your family and pets with you.
4. If you can safely reach your propane tank, turn off the main supply valve by twisting it to the right (clockwise).
5. Once you’re at a safe distance, call 911 and X-Press Energy.
6. Don’t go back inside until first responders and our service technician confirm that it’s safe.

Propane tank safety tips for homeowners

Good propane tank safety starts long before any emergency. With these habits, your system runs smoothly:

• Schedule regular inspections. Have a qualified technician check your tank, connections and lines for wear or corrosion.
